A behaviour specialist is willing to develop an understanding as to why behaviours are happening and supports people to put lasting behaviour change for themselves and/or others in place. We are all spending time with people and every single one of them uses behaviours all day every day, so we all have the capacity to support anybody and everybody in this capacity.
This might be practically applied in the case of a parent who wants to understand how to raise their children. Or a formally qualified teacher who wants to develop the skills to understand the behaviours of their students in the classroom. And likewise those who want to become a professional behaviour specialist and pursue formal qualifications.
The first skill of a behaviour specialist is to be prepared to ask, “I wonder why?” This question allows us to stay clear of judgment why people are using the behaviours they are using and opens the way to understanding the reason why those behaviours are happening.
All behaviour is a form of communication and as Senior Behaviour Specialist Tanya Curtis says, we can all become behaviour specialists by simply opening the door to understanding and asking, “I wonder why?” All day, every day and everywhere.
